Lemon and Dal Soup

IMG_1902My daughter came home saying that she doesn’t feel very well. She slept the whole evening and I was upset to see her ill. I thought of cooking something simple, digestive and tasty. So started preparing Saar, which is a very good dish for the cold season.

Eating this with soft and soggy rice and a little bit of ghee (clarinated butter), gives you so much energy and its easily digestable especially when you are ill.

With this soup, you can prepare the Bangalore’s famous Bonda soup. This can be eaten as breakfast or an evening snack.

Now I am going to tell you how to make this soup/saar.

Ingredients :-

1/2 cup Tur dal, pinch of haldi (turmeric powder)

one medium sized tomato, half lemon. 1 table spoon of cuminseeds and black pepper crushed.

pinch of hing/asafoetida, water. 1″of ginger and 2-3 green chillies, hand full of coriender leaves and curry leaves.

Method;

You need to boil Tur dal ( 1/2 cup) and add a pinch of haldi and a spoon oil before boiling the dal.

Smash the boiled dal to a smooth  paste, add lots of water (don’t make it very thin) add lengthily cut green chilli, cumin and pepper mix, chopped ginger, tomato, curry leaves and salt according to your taste.

Now boil the mixture for at least 10-15 min. Switch off the stove and add chopped coriander leaves and lemon juice.

Season (tadka/podni) it by heating 1 spoon ghee and add mustard seeds and a pinch of hing.

Hmm………Now enjoy eating with hot, soft rice. Or just as a soup.

Now for making bonda soup. Soak a cup of urad dal atleast for 2 hrs.

Grind it into a smooth paste and add salt (don’t add too much water whilst grinding) deep fry the paste to make vadas (without holes) and add it to the soup.

Simple and tasty bonda soup is ready. It’s a very satifying and healthy dish. To enter into a contest by Bloggers buzz they put this condition,  which is the BB theme colour is purple, yellow and has butterflies,create a dish with purple, yellow or butterfly themes or maybe even all of them. It can be sweet, savoury, a drink or anything you please.

Since it is a very cold weather I thought of preparing something hot and spicy but healthy. Since this Saar soup is yellow in colour, I chose.
